A powder room mirror is sized to the vanity, then chosen for shape. A rectangle runs about 2 to 4 inches narrower than the vanity on each side; a round runs 70 to 80 percent of the vanity width. With no shower and short visits, the powder room lets the mirror be the most sculptural piece in the house.
A half bath is a bathroom with a toilet and a sink, and nothing more. Dress it for guests and it becomes a powder room. That changes the brief. Steam matters less. Task light matters less. The mirror carries most of the design, and our two picks for the job are the Terra pieces STONE and PEBBLE.
Key takeaways
- Size to the vanity: a rectangle 2 to 4 in narrower on each side, a round at 70 to 80 percent of the width.
- On a pedestal sink or a narrow wall, go smaller. A backlit mirror needs wall around it to glow.
- Centre the glass at eye level, 58 to 65 in from the floor, 5 to 10 in above the counter.
- No shower means anti-fog is optional in most powder rooms.
- STONE and PEBBLE, both backlit organic shapes, are our strongest powder room pieces.
How big should a powder room mirror be?
The same starting points as any vanity, from our vanity mirror size guide. Powder room vanities tend to sit at the narrow end of the table.
| Vanity width | Rectangular mirror width | Round mirror diameter |
|---|---|---|
| 24 in | 18 to 20 in | 18 to 20 in |
| 30 in | 24 to 26 in | 22 to 24 in |
| 36 in | 28 to 32 in | 24 to 30 in |
| 42 in | 34 to 38 in | 30 to 34 in |
| 48 in | 40 to 44 in | 34 to 38 in |
Our trade sizing guide describes the smaller move for a powder room, 24 to 36 inches at the longest dimension, which lets the wall speak first. Its statement move, at 60 or 72 inches, is a deliberate exception for a long, uninterrupted wall where the mirror is meant to be the room. On most powder room walls, the smaller size is the safer call. The full logic is in how to specify architectural mirror dimensions.
Pedestal sinks and wall-hung basins
A pedestal sink gives you no vanity edges to size against. Size to the basin and the wall instead, and when the call is close, go smaller. A smaller mirror gives the room space to breathe. A backlit piece also needs wall around it for the glow to show, and wall sconces or a close side wall crowd it further. Powder rooms are often narrow, so this rule matters more here than anywhere else in the house.
Why do organic mirrors suit a powder room?
Because the room is hard everywhere else. Tile, stone, a clean basin and straight fixture lines leave one place for a soft line, and the mirror is it. Curved and sculptural mirrors lead Livingetc's five bathroom mirror trends for 2026, and the powder room is the natural home for one: a guest sees it once, close up, in a room with nothing else to look at.
An organic mirror is placed by visual weight. Keep its widest point inside the vanity edges, then give the silhouette more wall than a rectangle would get, so the curve has room to register. The longer argument is in why asymmetry feels like elegance.
STONE or PEBBLE: which suits your powder room?
Both are frameless, backlit and asymmetric, and both are about 25.5 inches wide. That width sits inside the 24 to 26 inch band for a 30 inch vanity, and inside the edges of anything wider. The difference is character.
PEBBLE is a smooth river-stone curve, one continuous line, narrow at the top and full at the bottom. A frosted band runs the full outline and is lit from behind, so the glow comes off the glass as a continuous ring. The Standard build runs from a wall switch and hangs in four positions. The Sensor build adds the wave motion sensor, dimming and colour temperature switching, and hangs vertically.
STONE is raw, asymmetric rock cut clean: straighter segments and a chipped, irregular outline. It hangs vertically. The light sits behind the glass, a wave motion sensor switches and dims it without a fingerprint on the surface, and anti-fog comes standard.
| STONE | PEBBLE | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Angular, raw-rock outline | Smooth river-stone curve |
| Size | 25.5 x 40.5 in, vertical | 25.5 x 41 in |
| Light | Backlit, frameless | Backlit through a frosted band |
| Control | Wave motion sensor, dimmable | Wall switch (Standard) or wave motion sensor (Sensor build) |
| Colour temperature | 3000K, 4000K, or switchable in the room | 3000K, 4000K or 5000K (Standard), switchable in the room (Sensor build) |
| Anti-fog | Standard | A Concept Studio option |
| Hanging | Vertical | Four positions (Standard), vertical (Sensor build) |
Choose PEBBLE for a softer room, plaster and pale stone, or where the four-way mount helps a tight wall. Choose STONE when the room has more edge: dark stone, veined marble, a sculptural basin. Both live in the Terra collection.
Prefer a round?
ORSO is a 32 inch circle defined by fine radial lines, softly backlit, with wave motion control and anti-fog. At 32 inches it sits in the round band for a 42 inch vanity, and it is the bolder call on a 36. COMO, from the Terra collection, takes its form from the phases of the moon: a round mirror, slightly offset. Universal hardware lets it hang more than one way, so the same piece can lean left, sit centred or lean right. More shapes are in round mirrors.
How should a powder room mirror be lit?
Powder rooms often run on a single ceiling light or a pendant. A backlit mirror adds the second layer: light on the wall around the glass, and at night it can carry a small room on its own. Choose the colour temperature for the evening. A warm 3000K suits most powder rooms; the reasons are in our guide to mirror colour temperature. Claris LED mirrors render colour at CRI 90+.
If guests will touch up makeup, add light at the face from the sides. Light from both sides of the mirror, often called cross-lighting, removes the shadows overhead light leaves under the eyes; lighting maker Kichler sets wall sconces on either side of the mirror, near eye level. A pair of sconces at eye level, near 65 inches from the floor, does that job beside a backlit mirror.
Does a powder room mirror need anti-fog?
Usually not. With no shower or bath, there is little steam to clear. Anti-fog on a Claris mirror is a heated film behind the glass. It comes standard on STONE and ORSO and is a Concept Studio option on PEBBLE, so the choice stays open. Specify it when the powder room sits next to a laundry or will one day take a shower. The anti-fog mirror guide covers how it works.
How high should a powder room mirror hang?
Centre the glass at eye level, roughly 58 to 65 inches from the floor, with the bottom edge 5 to 10 inches above the counter or the top of the faucet. On an organic shape, centre the visual weight rather than the bounding box. The full method is in our guide to mirror height over a vanity.

Frequently asked questions
What size mirror is right for a powder room?
Size it to the vanity. A rectangular mirror runs 2 to 4 inches narrower than the vanity on each side, and a round runs 70 to 80 percent of the vanity width, so a 30 inch vanity takes a 24 to 26 inch rectangle or a 22 to 24 inch round. On a pedestal sink or a tight wall, choose the smaller size.
Should a powder room mirror be round or organic?
Either works. An organic shape such as STONE or PEBBLE gives the room its one soft line against hard tile and stone, and it is placed by visual weight, with its widest point inside the vanity edges. A round softens the room in a quieter way.
Does a powder room mirror need to be lit?
It does not have to be, but a backlit mirror suits the room. The glow lights the wall around the glass and can carry a small room at night. Where guests will touch up makeup, add sconces at eye level on both sides of the mirror.
Do powder room mirrors need anti-fog?
Usually not. A powder room has no shower or bath, so there is little steam. Anti-fog comes standard on STONE and is a Concept Studio option on PEBBLE, which keeps the choice open if the room may take a shower later.
What is the difference between STONE and PEBBLE?
PEBBLE is a smooth river-stone curve with a frosted band lit from behind, offered on a wall switch or with the wave motion sensor. STONE is an angular, raw-rock outline, backlit and frameless, with the wave motion sensor and anti-fog as standard. Both are about 25.5 inches wide.
