Five features make a bathroom mirror smart: sensor control, dimming, anti-fog, colour temperature and magnification. Power decides the install. A smart bathroom mirror switches without a touch, stays clear after a shower and gives the white of light the vanity needs. Speakers, clocks and screens are extras.

"Smart" has no fixed definition. We judge a feature by one test: does it help the person at the mirror, every morning, for years? Where a Claris model carries a feature, we name it.

Key takeaways

  • Five features matter in a smart bathroom mirror: sensor control, dimming, anti-fog, colour temperature and magnification.
  • A wave motion sensor switches the light without a touch, and on most builds dims it too, so the glass stays free of fingerprints.
  • Anti-fog is a heated film behind the mirror. It keeps the glass warmer than the steam's dew point.
  • Some builds switch colour temperature in the room, such as STONE, SOUL, VITA, PULSE and the PEBBLE wave build; on others it is chosen at order.
  • A mirror hardwired to a plain wall switch has no buttons: light and anti-fog come on together.
  • Speakers, clocks and screens add electronics to the wettest wall in the house. Choose them only for a clear reason.

What makes a bathroom mirror "smart"?

Five features sit in the table. Power follows as a separate note.

Feature What it does What to check Claris examples
Sensor control Switches the light on and off without pressing the glass, and on most builds dims it Sensor, touch button, or a plain wall switch STONE, ACARI, DIMO, ORSO, PEBBLE Wave Motion build
Dimming Sets the light for a morning routine or a night visit Dims at the mirror, or from a wall dimmer (a factory build) STONE, ACARI, DIMO, EVOLUTION
Anti-fog Keeps the glass clear after a shower Standard, optional, or not offered on that model Standard on STONE and ACARI
Colour temperature Sets the white of the light, warm to cool One fixed choice, or switchable in the room Some builds switch, such as STONE, SOUL, VITA, PULSE and the PEBBLE wave build; each product page lists its options
Magnifier Close work: brows, skincare, shaving Magnification and whether it is lit EVOLUTION, 5x with its own LED ring

Power: hardwired or plug-in. Most Claris LED models are hardwired, with a plug-in option, and VIANO is plug-in only. Settle it before the wall is closed.

How does a motion sensor bathroom mirror work?

The control is the part of a smart bathroom mirror you meet every day. Claris ships the wave motion sensor on its sensor builds. A wave of the hand in front of the sensor switches the light, and on most builds the same sensor dims it. Nothing is pressed. Nothing needs wiping.

Touch buttons do the same job from the face of the glass. They work, and they collect fingerprints. A few models, such as DUO R and VIANO, keep a touch control on the glass.

On STONE, the sensor sits low on the glass as a small dark window under a thin white bar. It switches and dims the backlight, and anti-fog comes standard.

What a plain wall switch changes

Not every mirror needs a sensor. A mirror hardwired to a plain wall switch has no buttons at all. The switch is the control, so the light and the anti-fog come on together, and the light does not dim. PEBBLE comes as a Standard wall-switch build for exactly this case, alongside its Wave Motion build. Our guide to hardwired and plug-in LED mirrors covers the wiring side.

Dimming: one mirror for morning and night

Full light for shaving at seven in the morning is too much at midnight. Dimming handles both. On most sensor builds it happens at the mirror: STONE, ACARI, DIMO, ORSO and the PEBBLE Wave Motion build all dim from the sensor. BOCA's standard build does not dim, so check each product page.

Dimming from a wall dimmer is a different route. A standard hardwired mirror does not dim from the wall. The wall-dimmer option is a factory build, chosen with the order, with an external dimmable driver.

Anti-fog: how a heated smart mirror stays clear

Fog is condensation. Warm, wet air from the shower meets glass that sits below its dew point, and the water settles on the surface. A heated film behind the mirror keeps the glass warm enough that the steam has nowhere to land. There is no coating on the face and nothing to reapply.

Anti-fog is standard on STONE and ACARI, and on several more models in our anti-fog mirror collection. On PEBBLE and EMIRA it is a Concept Studio option. BUTTERFLY and COMO do not offer it. The anti-fog mirror guide covers the physics in more depth.

Colour temperature: fixed or switchable?

Colour temperature sets the white of the light: 3000K is warm, 4000K neutral, 5000K cool. Some builds switch colour temperature in the room; on others it is chosen at order. Each product page lists its options. STONE, SOUL, VITA, PULSE and the PEBBLE wave build are examples that switch: they change between all three in the room, so the morning can run neutral and the evening warm.

Switchable white light depends on its controls. The U.S. Department of Energy calls controls a critical element of any white-tuning system, so ask how the temperature changes before you choose a model. Our guide to bathroom mirror colour temperature sets out which white suits which room.

Colour accuracy matters as much as colour temperature. The Department of Energy describes a colour rendering index of 90 or higher as excellent colour fidelity. Claris LED mirrors run at CRI 90+. For the makeup side of the question, see the best lighting for a makeup mirror.

The magnifier: close work without a second mirror

EVOLUTION builds a 5x magnifier into the mirror, with its own LED ring. The ring is front-lit, so light falls on the face for brows, skincare and shaving. The main field is backlit and glows on the wall around it. The mirror is dimmable, and its colour temperature is chosen at order: 3000K, 4000K or 5000K.

Speakers, clocks and screens: worth it in a smart bathroom mirror?

Many retail smart mirrors add Bluetooth speakers, clocks, temperature readouts or touchscreens. Each one puts more electronics behind glass on a wet wall. The glass will outlast all of them.

None of the mirrors in our online range carries a speaker, a clock or a screen. We put the work into what gets used every day: the sensor, the light, the heat and the glass. A speaker on a shelf can be replaced in a minute. A speaker in the mirror cannot.

How to choose a smart bathroom mirror

Run this list before you compare finishes or sizes:

  • Control: wave motion sensor, touch button, or a plain wall switch.
  • Dimming: at the mirror on most sensor builds, or a factory wall-dimmer build.
  • Anti-fog: standard, a Concept Studio option, or not offered on that model.
  • Colour temperature: one fixed choice, or switchable in the room.
  • Power: hardwired or plug-in, decided before the wall is closed.
  • Glass: STONE, ACARI and EVOLUTION use Diamond ClearVision, an extra-low-iron Belgian glass.
  • Warranty: five years on every Claris mirror, residential and commercial alike.

Then size it. Our guide on what size mirror suits your vanity gives the widths and heights. To compare models side by side, browse the LED mirror collection or the organic forms of the Terra Collection. More guides live in the Design Journal.

Frequently asked questions

What is a smart bathroom mirror?

A smart bathroom mirror is an LED mirror with its features built in: usually a motion sensor that switches and dims the light, a heated anti-fog film, a set colour temperature and sometimes a lit magnifier. Some retail models add speakers, clocks or screens.

How does a motion sensor mirror work?

A sensor on the glass picks up a wave of the hand and switches the light on or off, and on most builds the same sensor dims it. Claris ships the wave motion sensor on its sensor builds, so nothing is pressed and the glass stays free of fingerprints.

Does a smart mirror need to be hardwired?

Not always. Most Claris LED mirrors are hardwired, with a plug-in option, and VIANO is plug-in only. Hardwiring gives the cleanest wall, while a plug-in build needs an outlet within reach. A licensed electrician should make any hardwired connection.

Can an LED mirror dim from a wall dimmer?

Only if it is built for it. A standard hardwired mirror does not dim from a wall dimmer. The wall-dimmer route is a factory build with an external dimmable driver, chosen with the order. Most sensor builds dim at the mirror and need none of this.

Which Claris mirrors change colour temperature?

Some builds switch colour temperature in the room; on others it is chosen at order. Each product page lists its options. STONE, SOUL, VITA, PULSE and the PEBBLE wave build, for example, switch between 3000K, 4000K and 5000K.

Is a smart bathroom mirror worth it?

For a vanity used every day, yes. A sensor keeps the glass clean, dimming makes one mirror work morning and night, and anti-fog ends the wipe after every shower. Speakers and screens are optional, and the glass will outlast them.
