Pick a medicine cabinet over a mirror when the sink needs closed storage and the wall can take a box. A recessed cabinet under 14½ inches wide fits between studs set 16 inches apart, inside a wall about 3½ inches deep. Choose a mirror when you want width, built-in light, anti-fog or a shape.
Claris makes mirrors, so we have a side in this. We also see the bathrooms where a cabinet is the better answer, and this guide says so plainly.
The choice comes down to four questions. Where else will things be stored? How wide is the vanity? What is inside the wall? And how should the face be lit?
Key takeaways
- A medicine cabinet trades width, light and shape for closed storage at eye level.
- A recessed cabinet under 14½ inches wide fits between studs on 16-inch centres. Wider means cutting a stud.
- Exterior walls, vent pipes and load-bearing walls make recessing harder, or rule it out.
- A mirror can run close to the vanity width: 28 to 32 inches wide on a 36-inch vanity.
- Built-in light, anti-fog and organic shapes sit on the mirror side of the choice.
- Storage can move: vanity drawers, a recessed niche, or a cabinet on a side wall.
Medicine cabinet vs mirror: the comparison
Set the two side by side and the trade is clear.
| Medicine cabinet | Mirror | |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Closed shelves at eye level | None; storage lives in the vanity or elsewhere |
| Width | Limited by the stud bay unless the framing is cut | Close to the vanity width |
| Depth off the wall | Recessed: near flush. Surface-mounted: the full box | Slim, on a keyhole mount |
| Wall work | Recessed: open the wall and frame the opening | None for an unlit mirror; power at the wall for an LED mirror |
| Lighting | Separate fixtures, or a lit cabinet | Front-lit, backlit or both, built in |
| Anti-fog | Check the model | A heated film behind the glass on anti-fog models |
| Shape | Rectangles | Rectangle, round, pill or organic |
When is a medicine cabinet the better choice?
A cabinet earns its place when the sink has nowhere else to keep things. That means a pedestal sink, a wall-hung basin with no drawers, or a shared bathroom where everyone needs a shelf. In those rooms, storage beats statement.
Recessed or surface-mounted
A recessed cabinet sits in the wall, so only the door shows. It needs a clear stud bay. This Old House notes that a cabinet under 14½ inches wide fits between the studs without cutting. Most wall framing is set on 16-inch centres, and many medicine cabinets are wider than that, so a stud often has to be cut and the opening reframed. In a load-bearing wall, that cut needs a header.
Depth is the second limit. A 2x4 stud is 1½ by 3½ inches in actual size, so a standard stud wall offers about 3½ inches of depth inside the framing. Check the cabinet's rough-opening depth against that before anyone cuts.
Then look inside the wall. Plumbing pipes and wires can sit in the bay. Supply lines and wires can often be moved; a large vent pipe or bearing framing is harder. On an exterior wall, a recessed cabinet displaces insulation.
A surface-mounted cabinet avoids all of this. It hangs on the wall like a mirror, and the full depth of the box projects into the room.
When is a mirror the better choice?
A mirror wins when the storage already exists and the wall has a job to do.
- The vanity has drawers. The storage is already at the sink, so the wall above can be all glass.
- The vanity is wide. A mirror can be sized to the vanity, while a cabinet is sized to the wall's framing.
- The face needs light. Front-lit glass puts light on the face; backlit glass washes the wall. Both come built in, with no fixtures to fit around a box.
- Steam is a problem. A heated film behind the glass keeps it clear after a shower on anti-fog models.
- The shape matters. A cabinet door is a rectangle. A mirror can be round, a pill, or an organic form like STONE.
How wide should the mirror be?
Size the mirror to the vanity. These widths come from our guide on what size mirror suits your vanity:
| Vanity width | Rectangular mirror width |
|---|---|
| 24 in | 18 to 20 in |
| 30 in | 24 to 26 in |
| 36 in | 28 to 32 in |
| 48 in | 40 to 44 in |
| 60 in (single) | 52 to 56 in |
Treat these as starting points. Our guide to standard bathroom mirror sizes goes size by size, and How to Specify Architectural Mirror Dimensions covers ceilings and clearances. More sizing guides sit in the Design Journal.
Medicine cabinet vs mirror: can you have both?
Yes, and many good bathrooms do. Centre the mirror over the vanity and move the storage. A recessed cabinet on a side wall, a niche beside the vanity, or an open shelf all keep the essentials close without giving up the mirror.
Plan the wall once. An LED mirror needs power before the wall is closed: a hardwired mirror connects to a junction box behind the glass, and a plug-in build needs an outlet within reach. If a recessed cabinet and a lit mirror share a wall, place the box and the cabinet bay together on the drawings. Our guide to hardwired and plug-in LED mirrors covers the wiring. A licensed electrician should make every connection.
Height follows the same rules either way. The bottom edge sits 5 to 10 inches above the countertop or faucet, with the centre roughly 58 to 65 inches from the floor. On accessible projects, the 2010 ADA Standards cap the bottom edge of the reflecting surface at 40 inches above the floor over a lavatory or countertop. See mirror height over a vanity for the full method.

Frequently asked questions
Is a medicine cabinet better than a mirror?
Neither wins in every bathroom. A medicine cabinet is the better choice when the sink has no other storage. A mirror wins on width, built-in light, anti-fog and shape, and an unlit mirror needs no opening in the wall.
How wide can a recessed medicine cabinet be without cutting studs?
Under about 14½ inches. That is the clear space between studs set 16 inches apart. A wider cabinet means cutting a stud and framing the opening, and in a load-bearing wall the cut needs a header.
What wall depth does a recessed medicine cabinet need?
A standard 2x4 stud wall offers about 3½ inches of depth inside the framing. Check the cabinet's rough-opening depth against the wall, and look inside the bay for pipes and wires before cutting.
Can a recessed medicine cabinet go in an exterior wall?
It can, but it displaces insulation in that wall. A surface-mounted cabinet or a mirror avoids the problem.
Can an LED mirror replace a medicine cabinet?
Yes. Close and patch the old opening so the wall is flat, then plan power: a hardwired LED mirror connects to a junction box behind the glass, and a plug-in build needs an outlet. A licensed electrician should make the connection.
What size mirror replaces a medicine cabinet?
Size the new mirror to the vanity. As a starting point, a 30-inch vanity takes a mirror 24 to 26 inches wide, and a 36-inch vanity takes one 28 to 32 inches wide.
