Vessel sink mirror height starts at the highest point of the faucet. Set the bottom edge 5 to 10 inches above that point and keep the centre at eye level, 58 to 65 inches from the floor. A vessel usually sits on a lower vanity, which wins back part of the bowl and faucet height.
The counter is only the starting line. The sink, the tap and the vanity height all decide where the glass can begin. Get that point right and the rest of the vessel sink mirror height follows.
Key takeaways
- Measure from the higher of the counter and the top of the faucet.
- Bottom edge 5 to 10 inches above that point. Centre at 58 to 65 inches from the floor.
- A vessel adds its bowl height above the counter, so vanities for vessels usually run lower.
- A tall faucet shortens the space for the mirror. A wall tap set low gives it back.
- Tall vertical mirrors let eye level fall inside the glass when the starting point is high.
- Accessible bathrooms cap the sink rim at 34 inches and the mirror's bottom edge at 40 inches.
How does sink type change mirror height?
Every sink sets a different starting point. The mirror's bottom edge goes 5 to 10 inches above the counter, or above the highest point of the faucet when that sits higher, as our vanity mirror sizing guide sets out. The table shows which point governs for each sink.
| Sink type | Measure the mirror from | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Undermount or integrated | The counter, or the faucet top if higher | A deck tap is often the higher point |
| Drop-in | The counter, or the faucet top if higher | The rim sits slightly proud of the counter |
| Vessel | The faucet top, usually | The bowl and a tall vessel faucet add height |
| Pedestal or wall-hung basin | The basin rim, or the faucet top if higher | No counter to measure from |
| Any sink with a wall-mounted tap | The top of the spout or handles | The tap sits on the mirror wall |
For the core height rules (counter to bottom edge, eye level, ceiling), see mirror height over vanity. This guide covers what the sink and the vanity do to them.
What is the standard bathroom vanity height?
The vanity height sets the counter, and the counter sets everything above it. Published guidance clusters in a narrow band.
| Vanity height (floor to counter top) | Where it is used | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 30 in | Makeup areas, children's baths | Homes & Gardens |
| 32 in | Older standard height; common under a vessel sink | Family Handyman |
| 34 in | A middle height that suits most users; the accessible maximum at the rim | Homes & Gardens, ADA |
| 36 in | Comfort or kitchen height, the current default | Family Handyman, Homes & Gardens |
Family Handyman puts vanities at 32 to 36 inches from the floor to the top of the counter, and advises setting a vessel sink on a 32 inch vanity so the rim lands close to a kitchen-height counter. Designers quoted by Homes & Gardens work between 30 and 36 inches, call 34 inches a height that suits most users, and size a vessel vanity to the specific sink and faucet.
The practical point: a vessel on a 32 inch vanity and an undermount sink on a 36 inch vanity can put the basin at much the same height. The faucet is what differs.
Vessel sink mirror height, worked through
Three numbers do the work.
1. Find the highest point. The counter, the vessel rim, or the top of the faucet, whichever is highest. Take the bowl and faucet heights from their spec sheets. 2. Add 5 to 10 inches. That is the bottom edge of the mirror. 3. Check the centre. The middle of the glass should land at 58 to 65 inches from the floor. Mirror height is twice the distance from the bottom edge to the centre.
Example: a vessel with a deck-mounted tap
The inputs below are example figures. Use your own sink and faucet numbers.
| Step | Undermount, 36 in vanity | Vessel, 32 in vanity |
|---|---|---|
| Counter height | 36 in | 32 in |
| Highest point (example) | Tap top 8 in above counter: 44 in | Vessel tap top 14 in above counter: 46 in |
| Bottom edge (+5 in) | 49 in | 51 in |
| Centre at 62 in | Mirror about 26 in tall | Mirror about 22 in tall |
| Centre at 65 in | Mirror about 32 in tall | Mirror about 28 in tall |
A tall vessel faucet squeezes the mirror. There are three clean answers.
- Move the tap to the wall. A wall-mounted spout set just above the bowl lowers the highest point, and the mirror gains height.
- Go round or horizontal. A circle or a wide, shallow rectangle fits a short band of wall without looking cramped. Size it with the round rule in what size round mirror for a vanity.
- Go tall. A tall vertical mirror starts above the faucet and keeps going. Eye level, 58 to 65 inches, falls inside the glass. Our architectural sizing guide treats PULSE this way: the mirror runs the wall, and its height closes the top clearance on its own.
Which mirrors suit a vessel or pedestal sink?
Shape decides how well a mirror copes with a high starting point.
- COMO: an offset round, backlit, 39.5 by 33.5 inches. Universal hardware lets it hang leaning left, centred or leaning right, which helps when the tap sits off-centre on the counter.
- PULSE: a tall mirror with a U-shaped cut, backlit, 24 by 60 or 24 by 72 inches, vertical only. Wave motion, anti-fog. The tall answer when the faucet is high.
- VITA: soft rounded corners with a slim frosted inner band, backlit, 26 by 44 inches, vertical. Wave motion and anti-fog.
- ORSO: a backlit 32 inch circle with fine radial lines. Wave motion, anti-fog, dimmable. A round that fits a shorter band of wall.
Pedestal and wall-hung basins have no counter, so the rim and the tap are the only reference points. A pair of tall pieces, such as TWINS, can work well over a pair of pedestals, each centred on its own basin.
Vessel sinks in accessible bathrooms
The 2010 ADA Standards set two limits that matter here. Section 606.3 places the front of the higher of the rim or counter surface at 34 inches maximum above the floor. Section 603.3 places the bottom edge of the reflecting surface at 40 inches maximum over a lavatory or counter.
The rim rule is the one vessel sinks trip over. A vessel's rim sits above the counter, so the counter must drop by the full bowl height to keep the rim at 34 inches. The mirror then has a narrow band: above the faucet, and starting no higher than 40 inches. A wall tap and a tall mirror solve both. For the full accessible layout, read ADA mirror height.
Choosing the mirror after the sink
Pick the sink and faucet first. Then measure the highest point, add 5 to 10 inches, and choose a shape that fits the band of wall that remains. Browse single vanity mirrors and backlit mirrors, and find more sizing guides in the Design Journal. Every mirror named here is built on Diamond ClearVision, an extra-low-iron Belgian glass, crafted in Europe, with a five-year warranty, residential and commercial alike.
Frequently asked questions
How high should a mirror be above a vessel sink?
Measure from the highest point of the faucet, since a vessel tap usually rises above the bowl and the counter. Set the mirror's bottom edge 5 to 10 inches above that point and keep the centre at eye level, around 58 to 65 inches from the floor.
What vanity height works with a vessel sink?
Family Handyman advises a 32 inch vanity under a vessel sink, so the rim lands close to kitchen counter height. Designers also size a vessel vanity to the specific sink and faucet, so check the bowl height on the sink's spec sheet first.
Does a wall-mounted faucet change mirror height?
Yes. A wall tap sits on the same wall as the mirror, so the bottom edge must clear the spout and handles. Set low, just above the bowl, a wall tap leaves more wall for the mirror than a tall deck-mounted vessel faucet.
What is the standard bathroom vanity height?
Most vanities run 32 to 36 inches from the floor to the top of the counter. 36 inches is today's comfort height, 32 inches is the older standard and suits vessel sinks, and 34 inches is a middle height that suits most users.
How high should a mirror be over a pedestal sink?
A pedestal sink has no counter, so measure from the basin rim or the top of the faucet, whichever is higher. Place the bottom edge 5 to 10 inches above that point, with the mirror centred on the basin and its centre near eye level.
Can an accessible bathroom have a vessel sink?
It can, with care. The ADA caps the higher of the rim or counter at 34 inches above the floor, so the counter must drop by the full bowl height. The mirror's bottom edge must also sit no higher than 40 inches over the lavatory.
