A round mirror over a vanity usually measures 70 to 80 percent of the vanity width across its diameter: 24 to 30 inches on a 36 inch vanity, 34 to 38 inches on a 48 inch vanity. When two sizes both fit, choose the smaller one. The wall around a round is part of the design.

A round is the easiest way to soften a room built from straight lines. It is also the easiest shape to oversize. A circle has no corners to tell the eye where it ends, so a round that looks right in a showroom can crowd a vanity at home.

This guide gives the diameters, the reasoning behind the smaller call, and the round mirrors that fit each band.

Key takeaways

  • Diameter: 70 to 80 percent of the vanity width.
  • 36 inch vanity: a 24 to 30 inch round. 48 inch vanity: 34 to 38 inches, with 36 a safe choice.
  • Between two sizes, the smaller one is safer: it leaves wall for the sconces and room for a backlit round to glow.
  • Close side walls and flanking sconces push the size down further.
  • Hang it like a rectangle: centre at 58 to 65 inches from the floor.

What size round mirror over a vanity?

These diameters come from our vanity sizing chart, the same figures published in what size mirror for your vanity. Widths are in inches.

Vanity width Round mirror diameter Claris rounds at this size
24 in 18 to 20 in A Concept Studio round, diameter set with the order
30 in 22 to 24 in A Concept Studio round, diameter set with the order
36 in 24 to 30 in VELA 25.5 or 29.5; VIANO 29.5
42 in 30 to 34 in ORSO 32; GIGI 32; VIANO 33.5
48 in 34 to 38 in VIANO 37.5; GIGI 36; ASOLA 36
54 in 36 to 40 in VIANO 37.5; GIGI 36; ASOLA 36
60 in (single) One round, or a pair VIANO 37.5, or a pair from the next row
60 to 72 in (double) A pair of 28 to 34 in ORSO 32; VIANO 29.5 or 33.5; GIGI 32

For a pair of rounds, the spacing between basins decides the size; our guide to the double vanity mirror works through the gap.

GIGI is listed by its outer diameter. The reflection sits in a 26 or 30 inch round aperture inside a Bronze Frosted ring, so the wall sees the full disc and the face sees the aperture.

Designers quoted by Homes & Gardens land in the same territory: one prefers a mirror about three-quarters of the vanity width, another keeps it slightly narrower than the vanity at 70 to 90 percent. The magazine's general rule for bathroom mirrors is the same instinct: no wider than the vanity.

Why is the smaller round the safer call?

Both sizes can work. It depends on the space: how close the side walls are, whether sconces flank the mirror, how wide the faucet spreads. When a measurement sits between two diameters, we steer to the smaller one almost every time. It gives the room more space to breathe, and the light glows better.

Take a 40 inch vanity. Seventy to 80 percent gives 28 to 32 inches. A 32 inch round sits at the top of the band; a 36 inch round runs past it. Either can hang there. The 32 leaves wall at both sides, room for a sconce, and a frame of plaster or tile for the light to land on.

Light is the deciding reason. A backlit round throws its glow onto the wall behind and around the glass. Run the mirror close to the vanity edges or tight to a sconce and that glow has nowhere to go. A smaller round shows the light. A larger one hides it.

The limits work at both ends. Under 30 inches on a large vanity, a round floats in too much blank wall. Over 40 inches, it starts to crowd the sconces and the basin.

How do sconces and side walls change the round size?

Sconces take space before the mirror does. Each one needs 3 to 4 inches of clear wall from the edge of the glass, the clearance in our trade guide to architectural mirror dimensions. So the diameter, plus 6 to 8 inches, plus the width of both sconces must fit the wall above the vanity. When it does not, the round shrinks first. A fixture above the mirror follows a similar rule: lighting maker Kichler keeps a vanity fixture no wider than the mirror below it, which over a round leaves a narrow fixture or none.

Close side walls do the same. A vanity tucked into an alcove has no spare wall beyond its edges, so a round sized to the top of the band will look pressed between the walls. Take the next size down.

One trade-off belongs on the table. A round gives less reflective surface than a rectangle of the same width, a point a designer makes in the same Homes & Gardens guide. Where the mirror does daily close work, a pill such as DIANO keeps the soft line with more usable glass.

How high should a round mirror hang over a vanity?

Hang it like a rectangle. Centre the glass at eye level, about 58 to 65 inches from the floor, with the bottom edge 5 to 10 inches above the counter or the top of the faucet. On a 36 inch vanity, a 30 inch round with its bottom edge at 43 to 46 inches puts the centre at 58 to 61 inches. Our guide to mirror height over a vanity has the full method.

Frequently asked questions

What size round mirror for a 36 inch vanity?

A round of 24 to 30 inches in diameter, which is 70 to 80 percent of the vanity width. VIANO at 29.5 inches and VELA at 25.5 or 29.5 inches sit inside that band.

What size round mirror for a 48 inch vanity?

A round of 34 to 38 inches, with 36 inches a safe choice. VIANO at 37.5 inches, GIGI at 36 inches and ASOLA at 36 inches all sit in the band.

Should a round mirror be smaller than the vanity?

Yes. A round sits at 70 to 80 percent of the vanity width, and when two sizes both fit, the smaller one is safer. It leaves wall for the sconces and gives a backlit round room to glow.

Can you put round mirrors over a double vanity?

Yes, as a pair. Two rounds of 28 to 34 inches, each centred on its own basin with at least 4 inches of wall between them, keep the symmetry of a double vanity.

How high should a round mirror hang over a vanity?

Centre it at eye level, about 58 to 65 inches from the floor, with the bottom edge 5 to 10 inches above the counter or the top of the faucet. On a 36 inch vanity, a 30 inch round with its bottom edge at 43 to 46 inches puts the centre at 58 to 61 inches.

Does a backlit round mirror need space around it?

Yes. The light from a backlit mirror lands on the wall around the glass, so the wall is part of the effect. A round that runs edge to edge or tight to the sconces loses that glow, one more reason to choose the smaller size.
