How to Specify a Custom Mirror: The Trade Buyer's Guide

VITA mirror by Claris in a minimal residential bathroom. Belgian ultra low-iron glass.

Crafted in Europe.

A mirror is design, not decoration. In a hospitality washroom, a flagship retail fit-out, a primary bath, the mirror is the first surface every client sees. Specifying it deserves the rigour given to the stone, the joinery, and the lighting plan.

Six decisions shape every custom mirror spec. Glass. Lighting. Construction. Mount. Controls. Commercial terms.

01 The glass

Most mirrors lie a little. Standard float glass is faintly green. You don't notice it on a window. You notice it the second skin reflects in it.

Ultra low-iron Belgian float, paired with copper-free silvering, returns the room without the cast. Paintings read true. Skin reads warm. Whites stay white.

Claris specifies both across every collection.

02 Lighting

Two decisions. Colour temperature, and where the light sits.

Temperature Reads as Specify it for
3000K Warm white. Residential register. Principal bath, powder room, residential dressing.
4000K Neutral. Daylight at noon. Commercial bathrooms, hospitality washrooms, healthcare, office.
5000K Cool daylight. True-colour rendering. Dressing rooms with serious makeup. Salon stations. Retail fitting rooms.
Tri-Temp switchable 3000K, 4000K, 5000K, switchable on the mirror. Hospitality where one piece serves multiple registers. Available on STONE, PULSE, SOUL.

Most non-Gemini LED pieces ship in 3000K, 4000K, or 5000K. Tri-Temp is a Radiance-line spec option (STONE, PULSE, SOUL). The Gemini pieces (Jumeau, Twins, MERCURE, GIGI) ship in 3000K or with no LED, to preserve the design language.

Where the light sits: backlight (around the edge, glow on the wall), frontlight (in the face, framing the reflection), both, or no LED. EVOLUTION is the multi-function piece for the dressing routine, 47-inch frosted-frame rectangle with a backlit main and a 5x magnifier carrying its own LED ring. SOUL pairs rounded corners with a backlit halo. PULSE carries a U-shaped cut, integrated lighting.

03 Construction

Most pieces ship single-glass: one mirror layer, low-iron, copper-free silvering. The right call when the brief calls for a clean framed reflection.

Some pieces are built differently. The Gemini Collection, designed by Benoît Gérard, is the studio's design-led line. Alice stands as a floor sculpture, two glass panels reading frosted on one face and gloss on the other, eight-millimetre glass, mounted on a Cosentino ÉCLOS base. The remaining Gemini pieces (Jumeau, Twins, MERCURE, GIGI) carry a bronze frosted finish on architectural forms with circular apertures. The construction is part of the piece's identity, not just its performance.

MERCURE: a wide horizontal form with two circular openings. Bronze frosted finish. By Benoît Gérard for the Gemini Collection.

04 Mount and orientation

Wall-mount hardware ships sized to the piece. Confirm the substrate at quote (drywall, stud, concrete, tile-clad, joinery panel).

Most pieces are symmetric. A few are handed: BUTTERFLY ships Left or Right, paired on a double vanity for the full effect. COMO shifts between three mount positions: left, centre, right. Confirm orientation against your elevation before the PO ships.

05 Controls

Soft touch is the default. Multi-touch on multi-function pieces. Wave motion for hospitality and healthcare where touch surfaces are a hygiene consideration.

Anti-fog: a heated film behind the mirror, prevents condensation during and after a hot shower. Specify on any bath piece within four feet of a shower head.

Dimming is integrated with the sensor on every LED piece.

Power: 120V hardwire to a junction box behind the wall. Plug-in variants on select pieces; confirm at quote. Claris pieces meet North American electrical standards.

06 Commercial terms

Lead time. Confirmed in every quote, against the production calendar. Catalogue pieces and custom work carry different windows.

Warranty. Five years on residential installations. Two years on commercial installations. The shorter commercial window reflects higher use cycles, not a different build.

When to go custom

Every piece can be modified. Scaled sizing. Custom frame finish. Etched graphics. Co-development on limited editions and private-label programs. Confirmed by shop drawing, same warranty as catalogue.
