To specify a hotel bathroom mirror, set CRI 90+ light at one colour temperature per room type, anti-fog in every bathroom with a shower, controls a guest understands without instructions, an accessible mounting height, and one size per room type, repeated across the keys.

Every guest uses it, every morning, in a room they do not know. BDNY, the boutique hotel design fair, comes to the Javits Center on November 8 and 9. Here is the detail behind each point, before you walk it.

Key takeaways

  • Light at the face matters more than light on the wall. Ask for the colour rendering and the colour temperature.
  • Specify anti-fog at the start, especially on shaped or custom mirrors.
  • Decide controls and dimming before rough-in. A guest should understand the mirror without instructions.
  • In accessible rooms, the bottom of the reflecting surface sits no higher than 40 inches above the floor over a lavatory or counter.
  • Size every mirror to the room type, and confirm the build repeats across every key.
  • BDNY 2026 runs November 8 and 9 at the Javits Center, New York.

Hotel mirror specification checklist

Ask for What good looks like Why it matters
Colour rendering CRI 90 or higher Skin and fabric look true under the mirror light
Colour temperature One temperature per room type, matched to the other lighting A 3000K mirror beside 4000K downlights looks wrong
Light direction Front-lit for grooming, backlit for atmosphere Decides whether the face or the wall gets the light
Anti-fog A heated film behind the glass, specified up front Clears the face area after a shower
Controls A wall switch or a wave sensor A guest understands it in the dark
Dimming Decided at the factory, with an external driver A standard hardwired mirror does not dim from the wall
Accessible height Bottom of the reflecting surface 40 in max above the floor over a lavatory or counter ADA 2010 Standards, 603.3
Mounting and service Blocking behind every mirror; driver and connections reachable Maintenance without retiling
Size Built to the room type, repeated across keys Every room matches
Warranty Written, and the same for commercial and residential Covers the renovation cycle

How should a hotel bathroom mirror be lit?

Light the face, at CRI 90 or higher, with one colour temperature per room type. A hotel bathroom is lit for a stranger. They will shave, do their makeup or check a shirt under that light, often before sunrise.

The research agrees. In the NKBA's 2026 bath trends report, 91% of the experts surveyed rank lighting quality as a top priority, and 92% say task lighting belongs in every primary bath. Integrated lighting in mirrors is listed as an emerging trend.

Three things to ask:

The glass matters too. Claris builds on Diamond ClearVision, an extra-low-iron Belgian glass. Standard mirror glass is faintly green. In a white marble bathroom, the guest sees the difference.

What anti-fog should a hotel mirror have?

A heated film behind the glass, specified at the start. A fogged mirror is the first complaint after a hot shower. On Claris anti-fog models, a heated film sits behind the mirror and clears the glass where the guest looks.

On a shaped or custom mirror, the film is a sealed element: it cannot be cut, and nothing else mounts on it. The factory lays out the rest of the mirror around it. More in how anti-fog mirrors work, or browse anti-fog mirrors.

Which mirror controls do hotel guests understand?

A wall switch or a wave sensor: neither needs instructions. Every control is a question the guest has to answer at night.

  • A wall switch. The simplest. Hardwired to the room switch, the mirror has no buttons. Light and anti-fog come on together.
  • A wave sensor. A hand passes in front of it. Claris ships the wave motion sensor on its sensor builds.
  • Dimming from the wall. Possible, and decided at the factory. A mirror built for a wall dimmer has no internal driver; an external dimmable driver sits in the wall or the vanity. Choose it with the order.

Plan the rough-in with the electrician before the walls close: the supply position behind each mirror, a separate connection behind the glass for anti-fog, and, on a wall-dimmed build, where the driver lives. A mock-up room is the place to prove all three before the order runs across the keys.

Mounting and service access

Ask two questions at specification. How is the mirror secured to the wall? And how does maintenance reach the connections later? Plan solid blocking in the wall behind every mirror before drywall, and keep any external driver where an engineer can reach it, in the vanity or a serviceable box, without lifting the glass off a tiled wall.

How high should a hotel bathroom mirror hang in accessible rooms?

In accessible rooms, the 2010 ADA Standards set the height. Over a lavatory or countertop, the bottom edge of the reflecting surface sits 40 inches maximum above the finished floor. A mirror that is not over a lavatory or counter goes lower: 35 inches maximum.

A tall mirror solves both at once: the bottom edge comes down to the counter line, and the top still reaches eye level for a standing guest. Our architectural mirror sizing guide has the height formula.

How should hotel mirrors be sized across room types?

One size per room type, built once and repeated across the keys. Hotels are built in key counts. A mirror that fits one room has to fit two hundred, the same way, from the same build.

Claris builds to the size the project calls for. Shape, lighting, controls and anti-fog are configured per room type and repeated across the keys. Lead times are confirmed in every quote. Start with how to specify a custom mirror. For double-vanity suites, pieces such as MERCURE carry two round apertures, one over each basin.

Care across the keys

Housekeeping cleans every mirror every day. A microfiber cloth and warm water do the job: liquid on the cloth, never on the glass, and no ammonia-heavy, acidic or abrasive cleaners near the edges, where the silvering and the electronics live. Read how to clean an LED mirror without damaging it and pass it to the operations team at handover.

Mirrors for the lobby washroom

The lobby washroom and the restaurant bathroom are where a design hotel shows what it is. That is the room for a piece. At OCHE King West in Toronto, the Gemini and Butterfly mirrors did that job: read the OCHE King West washroom case study.

Frequently asked questions

What should a hotel bathroom mirror include?

CRI 90+ lighting at one colour temperature per room type, anti-fog in any bathroom with a shower, controls a guest understands without instructions, an accessible mounting height, and a size built to the room type and repeated across the keys.

What colour temperature suits a hotel bathroom mirror?

Most guest bathrooms sit at 3000K or 4000K. 3000K is warmer and calmer; 4000K is closer to daylight and better for grooming. Match it to the room's other lighting.

How high should a mirror be in an accessible hotel bathroom?

Over a lavatory or countertop, the bottom edge of the reflecting surface sits 40 inches maximum above the finished floor, under the 2010 ADA Standards (603.3). Elsewhere, 35 inches maximum.

Should a hotel mirror have anti-fog?

In any bathroom with a shower, yes. A heated film behind the glass keeps the face area clear.

Can a hotel mirror dim from a wall dimmer?

Yes, when it is built for it at the factory, with an external dimmable driver. A standard hardwired mirror does not dim from the wall.

When is BDNY 2026?

November 8 and 9, 2026, at the Javits Center in New York, 10 am to 5 pm both days.
