What is a backlit mirror?
The LED sits between the mirror and the wall. You never see the source, only the glow it throws around the edge. The effect is ambient and architectural. The mirror becomes a soft light fixture as much as a reflective surface.

What is a front-lit mirror?
Front-lit mirrors carry the LED on the face of the glass, behind frosted bands or panels, so the light travels forward, straight onto the person standing at the vanity. This is task light: even, direct, honest about detail, and rendered at CRI 90+ on Claris LED pieces, filling the shadows under brows and chin that overhead fixtures leave behind. The lighting profession draws the same line between task and ambient light: the Illuminating Engineering Society publishes recommended illuminance targets per task, and grooming at a mirror is a task, not ambience. The frosted-border variation
Some backlit pieces soften the either-or. On MORENO, the LED diffuses through a frosted frame into a soft perimeter halo; on SOUL, a soft frosted edge gives off an even, white glow around a vertical piece with rounded corners. The construction is backlit, but the frosted border carries useful light forward as well as onto the wall, so the mirror glows at the edge and still helps at the glass.
Are backlit mirrors good for makeup?
They flatter the room more than the task. The glow is ambient, so fine work at the glass benefits from light aimed at the face.
