A backlit mirror carries its LED behind the body of the glass. The light spills out around the perimeter and washes the wall, so the mirror appears to float. A front-lit mirror places the light on the face of the glass, through diffused panels, so the light lands where you need it: on you. That one difference decides how the mirror behaves in the room.
What is a backlit mirror?
The LED sits between the mirror and the wall. You never see the source, only the glow it throws around the edge. The effect is ambient and architectural. The mirror becomes a soft light fixture as much as a reflective surface.
Two Claris examples show the range. What is a front-lit mirror?
Front-lit mirrors carry the LED on the face, behind frosted bands or panels set into the glass. The light travels forward, straight onto the person standing at the vanity. This is task light: even, direct, and honest about detail.

What about frosted-frame mirrors?
A third construction sits between the two: the LED shines through a frosted border on the face of the mirror, producing an even halo around the perimeter. Are backlit mirrors good for makeup?
They flatter the room more than the task. The glow is ambient, so fine work at the glass benefits from light aimed at the face.
