A pill shaped mirror is a capsule: two straight, parallel sides closed by two half-circles. Size it like a rectangle, 2 to 4 in narrower than the vanity on each side. Hang it vertical over one basin, horizontal over a long vanity or console. Over a 30 in vanity, that means a pill about 22 to 26 in wide.
The shape goes by several names: pill, capsule, stadium, racetrack. The geometry is the same, and so are the rules. Designers keep returning to it because a curve softens a hard wall of tile and stone, a point Livingetc's 2026 bathroom mirror trends makes about curved mirrors in general.
Key takeaways
- A pill shaped mirror has two straight parallel sides and fully rounded ends. An oval has no straight side. An arch has a flat base.
- Size the width like a rectangle: 2 to 4 in narrower than the vanity on each side.
- Vertical suits a single basin. Horizontal suits a long vanity, a console or a feature wall.
- A backlit pill puts a glow on the wall. A front-lit capsule puts the light on the face.
- On two-layer pieces, size the mirror opening for the face and the outer glass for the wall.
- DIANO BLACK, DIANO WHITE, LEDA, TWINS and SOLARA are capsule pieces you can order online.
What is a pill shaped mirror?
A pill shaped mirror is a rectangle whose short ends are full half-circles. The long sides stay straight and parallel. That straight run is what separates it from the oval, and it is why a pill sits comfortably over a straight-edged vanity.
| Shape | Outline | Straight edges | On the wall |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pill or capsule | Two parallel sides, two half-circle ends | 2 | Soft at the ends, architectural along the sides |
| Oval | One continuous ellipse | 0 | The softest; no line to align with the counter |
| Arch | A half-circle top on a flat base | 3 | A doorway reference; the base sits square to the counter |
| Rounded rectangle | Four straight sides, small corner radii | 4 | The quiet default |
The capsule keeps the calm of a curve and a straight line to align with the counter.
What size pill shaped mirror fits your vanity?
Use the width rule from our vanity mirror sizing guide: start 2 to 4 in narrower than the vanity on each side. That guide's quick table gives a rectangle of 24 to 26 in over a 30 in vanity. A pill can sit at the narrow end of the per-side rule, down to 22 in, because the rounded ends take glass out of the corners and the piece looks lighter than a rectangle of the same width.
| Vanity width | Mirror width | Pill orientation | Claris capsule pieces |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26 to 28 in | 20 to 24 in (2 to 4 in each side) | Vertical | DIANO WHITE, 21.5 x 37.5 in |
| 30 in | 24 to 26 in (22 in for a pill) | Vertical | DIANO BLACK, 23.5 x 39.5 in |
| 36 in | 28 to 32 in | Vertical | TWINS, 30 in wide |
| 54 in | 46 to 50 in | Horizontal | ALHENA, a rounded form, 48 x 30 in |
| 60 to 72 in, double | Two 24 to 30 in | Vertical pair | Two TWINS, 26 or 30 in wide |
Many Claris models can be built to the size the project calls for, so a wall that falls between rows still has an answer. More guides live in the Design Journal.
Height and the ceiling
A pill is tall for its width. Our architectural sizing guide keeps the top edge 6 to 12 in below the ceiling. For the gap above the counter and eye level, see how high to hang a mirror over a vanity. On accessible projects, the 2010 ADA Standards cap the bottom edge of the reflecting surface at 40 in above the floor over a lavatory or counter. See our ADA mirror height guide.
Should a pill mirror hang vertical or horizontal?
Vertical is the default over a single basin. It gives a tall reflection on a narrow wall and leaves room at the sides for sconces. DIANO BLACK and DIANO WHITE are vertical pieces.
Horizontal turns the capsule into a long, low line. It belongs over a wide vanity, a console or a bench. LEDA takes a universal mount, so the same piece hangs either way, as does the rounded ALHENA. TWINS goes further: one vertical form with a round mirror opening, hung alone or paired, upright or on its side.
For a double vanity, a matched pair of vertical pills gives each person a centred mirror. Centre each one on its own basin. Our vanity guide sets a 4 in minimum gap between a pair, or 6 to 8 in when a sconce or a tall tap sits between them. One mirror or two over a double vanity covers that decision in full.
Backlit or front-lit: how should a capsule mirror be lit?
- Backlit. The LED sits behind the glass and washes the wall, so the outline glows. DIANO BLACK and DIANO WHITE are backlit, at 3000K, 4000K or 5000K; each product page lists whether the colour temperature is fixed or switches. SOLARA's slim frame sits proud of the glass, and its backlight traces the inner edge of the frame. The Gemini pieces take a 3000K backlight, or none.
- Front-lit. The LED sits on the glass and lights the face. SOLENNE is the capsule in this form, frameless, made to order through Concept Studio.
Our backlit vs front-lit guide sets the two side by side, and the colour temperature guide weighs 3000K against 4000K. Claris LEDs are CRI 90+, so skin and finishes come back true.
For a steamy bathroom, DIANO WHITE carries Wave Motion control and anti-fog as standard, and DIANO BLACK has both on its Wave Motion builds. The anti-fog is a heated film behind the mirror; the anti-fog mirror guide explains how it works.
Framed, frameless or two layers of glass?
| Build | What you see | Claris pieces |
|---|---|---|
| Metal frame | A thin matte band holds the outline | DIANO BLACK and DIANO WHITE in matte stainless steel; SOLARA in black matte aluminum |
| Frameless | A polished glass edge, nothing else | SOLENNE |
| Two layers of glass | A tinted glass body around a mirror opening | ALHENA, LEDA and TWINS, from the Gemini Collection |
The Gemini Collection, by Benoît Gérard, sets a Diamond ClearVision mirror, an extra-low-iron Belgian glass, over 6 mm Belgian Bronze Frosted glass. The outer glass carries the shape. The mirror is an opening within it. ALHENA, a rounded form, centres one oval. LEDA sets its oval off-centre in the pill body. TWINS holds a round, and also comes with Bronze Mirror back glass.
Size these pieces by both layers: the opening for the face, the outer glass for the wall. LEDA's 60 x 30 in body holds a 44 x 26 in oval mirror. Our guide to bronze, graphite and smoked mirrors covers the tints in detail.
The capsule also stands on the floor. ALICE sets a capsule-shaped Diamond ClearVision mirror on both faces of an 8 mm tinted Belgian panel, in Bronze, Graphite or Black. It stands 74 in tall overall on a Cosentino ĒCLOS base, unlit. How to choose a floor mirror covers freestanding pieces.
Where does a pill shaped mirror work best?
- Over a single vanity with a round or vessel basin. The curves answer each other. Vessel sink mirror height covers the clearance.
- In a narrow powder room. A vertical pill fills the wall without crowding it. See the powder room mirror.
- Over a console in an entry. Hung horizontal, centred at the 60 to 65 in eye height our sizing guide gives for entries.
- In a dressing room, at full length. SOLARA runs 67 or 75 in tall. The full-length mirrors guide covers the rest.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a pill mirror and an oval mirror?
A pill mirror has two straight, parallel sides joined by half-circle ends. An oval is one continuous curve with no straight edge. The pill lines up with a straight vanity and counter; the oval floats.
What size pill mirror fits a 30 inch vanity?
Start 2 to 4 inches narrower than the vanity on each side, which gives 22 to 26 inches wide. DIANO BLACK, at 23.5 by 39.5 inches, sits inside that range and hangs vertical.
Can a pill shaped mirror hang horizontally?
Yes. Horizontal suits a long vanity, a console or a bench. LEDA and TWINS take a universal mount and hang either way, while DIANO BLACK and DIANO WHITE hang vertical only.
Is a capsule mirror the same as a pill mirror?
Yes. Capsule, pill, stadium and racetrack all describe the same outline: straight parallel sides and fully rounded ends.
Do Claris pill mirrors have anti-fog?
DIANO WHITE has anti-fog as standard, and DIANO BLACK has it on its Wave Motion builds. On both, the anti-fog is a heated film behind the mirror.
Are pill mirrors good for small bathrooms?
Yes. A vertical pill gives a tall reflection on a narrow wall and leaves room at the sides for sconces or a towel bar. In a small powder room, it fills the wall without crowding it.
